Liceo Mindanao Center for Biodiversity and Conservation

   Biological diversity, or “biodiversity” refers to the variety of life on earth. As defined by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, it includes a diversity of ecosystems, species and genes, and the ecological processes that support them. Natural diversity in ecosystems provides essential economic benefits and services to human society – such as food, clothing, shelter, fuel and medicines – as well as ecological, recreational. Cultural and aesthetic values, and thus plays an important role in sustainable development. Biodiversity is under threat in many areas of the world. Concern about global biodiversity loss has emerged as a prominent and widespread public issue.

 

   The Liceo de Cagayan University Mindanao Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (LIMCEBCON) is a private institution that aims to contribute to the protection, restoration, conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in Mindanao.

The LIMCEBCON aims to:

​

  • design and implement various conservation programs and projects;

  • advance scientific research in diverse ecosystems;

  • strengthen the application of science to conservation practice and public policy;

  • promote partnership between Filipinos and overseas environmental organizations, coordinating their efforts in wild nature protection;

  • develop efficient mechanisms of fundraising for nature conservation projects;

  • serve as an education and training center for communities, wildlife officials and visitors to the center in order to increase awareness of and build capacity for conservation and environmental protection and management; and

  • promote the sustainable use of natural resources while linking international to local environmental issues.

Center Management

 

LIMCEBCON is managed by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Publication, and Extension and exercises the following responsibilities:

​

  1. Takes charge all Biodiversity and Conservation Programs and Projects in Terrestrial, Freshwater, and Marine ecosystems and other matters and activities related to Biodiversity and Conservation;

  2. Organizes, supervises, reviews and evaluates the peer review system and the research studies for Publication in the Asian Journal of Biodiversity (AJOB);

  3. Prepares the annual budget and/seeks the necessary funds for the operation of the Center as well as research grant and sourcing of researches from external sources and compensating contributors;

  4. Management of research partnerships and linkages exclusive to the Center, visits universities and agencies for possible collaborations in Biodiversity and Conservation Research, presents research outputs to the University, Local, National, and International and takes charge of the advocacy of Biodiversity and conservation programs of the Center;

  5. Manages the preparation of necessary documents intended to meet the research requirements for accreditation of the University; and Renders full-time work with Faculty equivalent status with an overload of 9 units beyond office hours.
